Climb the Enterprise Pit Mine Lookout in Pine Creek for a panoramic view of the open cut pit that was left when Pine Creek Goldfields ceased operation in 1994. Before being mined this area was known as Enterprise Hill. Now called Enterprise Pit, the landmark is 135 metres deep and filled with water. When it was in operation, more than 764,000 ounces of gold were extracted from the mine. Pine Creek is situated 220km south of Darwin and 90 km north of Katherine at the junction of the Stuart and Kakadu Highways in the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory. The town was established in the late 1800s as a result of the discovery of gold by the crew of the Overland Telegraph Line. Pine Creek still relies on mining for its survival with the majority of the population involved in mining or related industries. Tourism has recently become an important part of the town's economy as facilities for travellers have improved.
